Below are listed some of the better suited vegetables for square foot gardening. Some are clearly not suited for limited spaces, but these vegetables will be preceded by an asterik, denoting the necessity to plant this type only at the garden perimeter, within the confines of a garden box, or beyond the main body of the garden.
Corn is a controversial subject among square foot gardeners. Some people prefer the old row method of planting. Others claim that planting them closer together in an irregular bunch will help with the pollenation process, resulting in ears with even rows of kernals. I believe they are right. Each strand of "silk" leads to an individual kernal, and each of those strands needs to be pollinated for that to happen. Some people are of the single seed per square school, while others have sucessfully planted two kernals per square. As with other large plants, you will want to keep them away from the garden's main body. Ideally you woul grow them in a row of squares separated from the rest of the garden, or at least in a row that won't prevent sunlight from hitting the other plants. Here's an example.
